Three miles north of Denison is Lake Randell. One mile south of Lake Texoma, in extreme north central Grayson County, lies Lake Randell (at 33deg48’ N, 96deg35’ W). Denison built the reservoir in 1909, and it impounded Shawnee Creek’s waters. It has a maximum capacity of 5,400 acres and an area of 172 acres. The reservoir is located at an elevation above the mean sea level of 640 feet. It has a drainage area of eleven square miles above the dam. However, this area does not produce enough runoff for the lake to supply the water needs of Denison. The lake has had water pumped in from Lake Texoma since July 1962.
