The reservoir was created by the construction on the Neches river of the Blackburn Crossing Dam, 5720 feet long. This project began in 1960 and was completed on June 13, 1962. The resultant lake measures 18 miles in length, from northwest to southeast, and has 135 miles of shoreline. The largest part of the lake measures 4 miles in width. It is fed mainly by water from the Neches and Kickapoo Creek.
