Lake Amon G. Carter can be found 6 miles south from Bowie, Montague County. It is located on Big Sandy Creek. Lake Amon G. Carter technically consists of two lakes. The original lake was constructed in 1956. It has a different type habitat to the 500-acre extension built in 1985. The original lake was built in 1956 and there was a thirty-year gap before the expansion. This habitat is not present in the new extension. The maximum depth is 50 feet and the lake’s surface area is 1,848 acres. The conservation pool elevation stands at 920 feet above the sea level.
