Amistad Reservoir, Spanish: Presa Amistad, is a reservoir located on the Rio Grande at the confluence of the Devils River approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Del Rio in Texas. The border of the lake is formed by Val Verde County, on the US side of the international frontier, and the state of Coahuila, on the Mexican side. The American shoreline forms Amistad National Recreation Area. In 1969, the construction of Amistad Dam created the reservoir. Through the International Boundary and Water Commission, the dam and lake are jointly managed by the United States and Mexico governments. The Spanish word “friendship” is the name of the dam. The reservoir is also known by Lake Amistad.
